Astana office of KazTransGas JSC hosted a meeting with management from Baker Hughes International Oil&Gas Service Company. The meeting was devoted to discussion of main technical and economic parameters for methane production project on coal beds in Karaganda coal mining basin and further strategy of optimal field development.

This October, KazTransGas JSC and Baker Hughes signed a contract to develop feasibility calculations for estimating prospects of production and commercial sales of methane from coal beds. The project is jointly conducted with Kazakh Oil and Gas Institute JSC and research and technology consultants from Karaganda State technical university.

During the meeting, Nurzhan Nurlanov, Technical Deputy General Director of KazTransGas JSC stated that cooperation with Baker Hughes Company will facilitate attracting innovation technologies to project of methane production from coal beds since the company has wide experience in such projects.  

Baker Hughes has worked for projects of commercial methane production in such countries as India, Australia, Canada, USA, and China. Specialists estimate that Kazakhstan has good resources and conditions to develop the sphere.

During the present stage, KazTransGas JSC performs a set of geological prospecting works on Sherubaynurinsk lot in Karaganda region, according to order from President, Nursultan Nazarbaev, to prospect and develop methane on coal beds. Prospecting and test exploitation wells have been drilled; first gas samples have been produces. According to analysis results of core received from the leading international laboratories (USA, China, and Europe), features of coal from Sherubaynurinsk lot are similar to those from largest deposits in the USA, India, and Australia.
